The long tail of social sciences was not yet explored...
Webeehive was founded as an offshoot of the CIPI Network, a now abandoned project, to create an innovative collaborative platform for social sciences. The CIPI Network was a membership based network that demonstrated too slow in expanding and producing fresh breakthrough ideas.
In early 2007, Paolo Raffone and Jacopo Avogadro, co-founders of CIPI Network, discussed with several members about the possible way to make the network more dynamic, open, inclusive and participative. The concept of collective intelligence and the potential of Web 2.0 applications convinced Paolo Raffone to launch a new enterprise - Webeehive - around the idea that the long tail of social sciences was not yet explored.
Meeting with Thierry Lewillye, a philosopher and web designer, introduced the idea of a collaborative website designed to stimulate collective intelligence integrating the various Web 2.0 tools into a single platform. This would allow producing knowledge in a new way, using simultaneously a wide range of media: wiki, forum, blog, messages, tags, social bookmarking, images, video, audio.
The project Webeehive started in September 2007 and it went online (Beta) in early 2008. Webeehive is a continuing project, co-evolving with the contribution of users and volunteers around the world.
